Justice League of America The Ray Rebirth #1

The Ray is the third character joining Batman’s new Justice League of America. As with the rest of the 4 episode one-shots, Justice League of America The Ray: Rebirth #1 tells the story of how Ray becomes the hero that eventually joins with the Bat. The difference is that writer Steve Orlando has created something special.

In this one-shot we’re introduced to Ray Terrill on his birthday. A boy who can’t go outside for fear of exploding. He’s sensitive enough that he can’t even have candles on his cake. So, what does a bored boy, who has no friends and can’t go outside decide to do? No, not that! He goes outside. Honestly.

Upon exploring this fantastic new world, Ray explodes and disappears. Gone for years, he grows up watching people live out their lives rather than living his own. That is until he runs into the only friend he ever had.

This journey of self-discovery is an important comic book for anyone who struggles with their own identity. Its message is one of positivity and acceptance. It doesn’t matter if you are male/female/gay/straight or can set people on fire in a split second. You are the one in control of your life. Sometimes it’s not easy being different, and that’s OK.

Justice League of America The Ray: Rebirth #1 Conclusion

Much like The Atom Rebirth special, Justice League of America The Ray: Rebirth #1 is kind of story that comic books were supposed to tell. With aliens, monsters and creatures that go bump in the night it can be forgotten that comics are a tool to tell people you can be who you want to be. The comic is an absolute joy to read, Stephen Byrne’s art and colour direction perfectly complement Steve Orlando’s story.
