Steve Orlando is rebooting the Justice League of America as part of DC’s Rebirth initiative. Before we get to the main series, 4 special one shots are being released to reintroduce the core team. This time we have Justice League of America Vixen Rebirth #1. Much like The Atom, this comic focuses on how Mari McCabe rediscovered her roots and became the all-powerful Vixen.
The book is presented more like an episode of Arrow rather than your straightforward origin story. The present and past flip-flop throughout the course of the book, each playing off the events before it. The similarities don’t stop there. Using her money earned by being one of the highest paid supermodels, Mari is determined to help the disadvantaged youth.
However, she takes her eye off the ball. It’s the jolt she needs to confront her tragic past and start fighting for the people that can’t. Throughout the pages, you really feel for the character. From Mari’s upbringing in the Zambesi, to letting the people she set out protect slip through the cracks, it’s an onslaught of someone struggling to do the right thing.
Rolling with Mari as she gets punched and feeling how she feels is where the story shines. Her journey to grabbing life by the neck is told expertly. Her struggle is yours. With Vixen Rebirth #1 Orlando has created a story that is not only fabulous to read once, but over and over.
The slight downslide – and I mean slight – is that for years of disregarding her powers, as soon as McCabe comes to call out the animals within, suddenly she knows how they work. A couple of panels of her learning to fly could have been nice. It’s really a small point on another great edition to the JLA Rebirth one-shots.
Justice League of America Vixen: Rebirth #1 Conclusion
Vixen Rebirth #1 is like a graphic novel packed into 20 short pages. It can be a standalone title or part of something bigger. Whatever the future holds for Mari McCabe, she seems to be in safe hands with Steve Orlando and his creative team.
